Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
