New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
