Taliban Employed Discarded UK Equipment to Locate Afghans Who Worked Alongside Western Troops, Investigation Is Told
A whistleblower has revealed an official investigation that the UK left behind confidential technology permitting the Taliban to locate local individuals that had served with international military.
Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk
Person A, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were told to change residences and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.
MPs are currently examining the UK government's response of a catastrophic disclosure of private information concerning approximately 19k individuals who had asked to come to Britain to escape the regime.
The Information Breach Happened
An electronic document with private information, including names, phone numbers and sometimes family information, was mistakenly released by a staff member employed at British military command in early 2022.
The incident came to light in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had requested to move to the UK were posted on social media.

Consequences of the Security Lapse
Initial findings presented to the inquiry estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been executed.
A superinjunction concerning the breach was put in force in August 2023 and restricted all details regarding the matter from public disclosure until July 2025.
Security Recommendations

Person A described disturbing abuse experienced by at-risk Afghans, including electrocution, waterboarding, and physical abuse.
“Instances include young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
