Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

Price's death comes shortly after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
