The Mayor-Elect states his intention to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, was not quick to announce he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his previous Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
