People have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"The aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled official memorials until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an late session of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the morning session finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • Future governance of the territory

Citizen Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that about the majority of the population desire the hostilities to finish in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk comes, the dread comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"We are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional dead people had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south, medics said.
